Instagram is all set to improve teen safety with new features for its young users. Following the launch of Teen Accounts last year (automatically applicable for users under 16), the platform is now testing new AI technology in the U.S. to identify accounts that may belong to teens, even if they’ve listed adult birthdates. These accounts will be proactively placed into Teen Account settings.
With over 54 million active Teen Accounts globally and 97% of users aged 13–15 opting to stay in protected mode, the initiative has seen strong adoption. Meta has now expanded the Teen Account experience to Facebook and Messenger as well.

To further support families, Instagram is introducing notifications for parents, encouraging them to talk to their teens about accurately representing their age online. Expert-backed tips, including advice from pediatric psychologist Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart, will help guide these conversations.
Meta emphasizes the importance of parental involvement and technological innovation in keeping teens safe online. By combining AI detection with age verification and expert guidance, Instagram aims to ensure more teens experience age-appropriate interactions while navigating the digital world. The update is part of an ongoing effort to evolve with the needs of families online.
