On May 22, Google announced a new GovTech accelerator program for U.S.-based startups building tools for local and state governments. The company has committed $3 million in funding and support to drive tech innovation in public services.

The Google for Startups Accelerator: GovTech will accept applications from companies tackling civic issues like public safety, justice, transportation, and community engagement. Each startup will receive up to $100,000 in Google Cloud credits and mentorship from product, engineering, and sales experts.

The three-month program targets early-stage companies that already have a working product and some initial traction. Google aims to help them scale faster by improving user experience, leveraging AI, and building out infrastructure.

This new initiative follows Google’s pattern of backing startups that work on social impact. Past programs supported groups working in education, climate, and health. With GovTech, Google hopes to push forward digital transformation in government services, especially in smaller cities that lack access to cutting-edge technology.

The first cohort starts this fall. Applications are now open and will close on July 17. Startups accepted into the program will join a growing network of Google-backed innovators focused on public good.
