May 27, 2025 – Google Drive just got much smarter about videos. Starting today, users can track how many times someone opens a video stored on Drive. Google added this feature to a new Analytics section inside the Details panel of the video player.

The open count appears automatically, and no, there’s nothing for admins to configure. Anyone with access to a video can check the stats. Just click the three-dot menu on a video, hit Details, and scroll to the Analytics section.

This feature lands after a string of upgrades to the Drive video player, including automatic captions and searchable transcripts. Google says users asked for viewer metrics, and now they can see if their content actually gets watched.

The update is now live for Rapid Release domains. Google will start the full rollout to Scheduled Release domains on June 9, 2025, with full visibility expected within three days.

The feature works across all Google Workspace tiers, including personal accounts and Workspace Individual subscribers. For help storing and playing videos in Drive, users can visit Google’s support page.

With open counts now visible, creators and collaborators can finally get quick insight into how often their content is being played, without leaving Drive.
