Key notes

  • Edge PDF reader is getting a new Copilot-related feature called “smart keywords.”
  • The AI scans the whole document to determine what are the keywords that represent it.
  • Then, once you click on the word, the Copilot side panel on Edge will open for AI-powered web search.

Are you an Edge user? Chances are you’re familiar with Edge PDF reader. It’s natively built-in inside the browser, and you won’t have to open another app to read a PDF file.

And now, Microsoft seems to be working on a feature that makes your PDF reading experience a whole lot better. Powered by the Copilot AI, you’ll soon be able to ask the AI to scan the whole document and then generate “smart keywords” for it.

A spot by trusted browser enthusiast @Leopeva64 on X hints at this feature. The best part of this feature is that, once you click on any of these smart keywords, it’ll take you to the Copilot side panel on the browser.

Here’s what it looks like, courtesy of the spotter:

There is a button that you can click to activate this feature. You can see the button right next to the “Ask Copilot” button that’s already been available even for regular users in the Stable channel.

“Generate smart keywords for this document with Copilot,” the button’s description reads.

Microsoft has previously said that it will remove the old PDF viewer from Edge in early 2025, replacing it with a new Adobe Acrobat-powered engine. It’s not a total removal, fortunately, as it’s just a change of the engine that powers the Edge PDF reader.

And it’s not the only Copilot-related feature that’s been worked on Edge. Microsoft has been revamping the “Draft with Copilot” feature on the browser, as well as the “Circle to Search”-like feature called “Circle to Copilot” on Edge.
