On May 13, 2025, Discord marked its anniversary by asking staff to share the games that first brought them to the platform. The answers weren’t polished marketing pitches—they were real stories about late-night lobbies, yelling over proximity chat, and the quiet bonding that happens between rounds.
Christina from Product Marketing recalled quarantine-era Among Us games that pulled together scattered college friends. She created a server to organize games, and before long, 10-player lobbies became the norm. Today, that group still talks daily.

Her latest favorite? R.E.P.O.—a co-op horror game where players break into haunted houses and talk through proximity voice. “It’s chaotic, funny, and terrifying,” she said. “We’re screaming into our mics and having the best time.”
Others on the team shared similar stories. For some, it started with World of Warcraft guilds or Minecraft builds. For others, it was shared obsessions with games like Valorant or League of Legends.
Each game opened a door to Discord, and once inside, they stayed.
Discord didn’t push these connections. The games did. But it’s clear the platform became the place where those connections grew, and stuck. The blog post reads like a thank-you note to the titles that built their digital hangouts.
