Baidu beats Google to become the No.2 player in smart speaker market

Baidu, China’s leading search engine, last year entered the smart speaker market with the introduction of DuerOS. DuerOS is a conversational artificial intelligence system developed by Baidu which can be licensed by device OEMs to enable voice experiences. Basically, DuerOS is a Chinese equivalent of Alexa and Google Assistant. In less than 2 years, Baidu has now passed Google to become the No.2 player in smart speaker market. Baidu posted an astonishing growth of 3700% to reach 4.5 million units in Q2 2019. Amazon maintaining its No.1 position with 6.6 million units of Echo smart speaker sales. It is important to note that Amazon Echo speakers are available worldwide whereas Baidu’s speakers are only available in China.
Canalys also mentioned that China’s smart speaker market doubled its quarterly shipment size to 12.6 million units, which is twice as large as the US market.
