Apple just brought ChatGPT to Image Playground. During its WWDC keynote on June 9, it announced that alongside existing styles like sketch and animation, users can now apply six new styles courtesy of ChatGPT-powered generation – oil painting, vector, anime, print, and watercolor, right inside the app.
The update also includes a brand-new Image Playground API, opening the door for developers to integrate advanced image creation. Apple stressed that image processing still defaults to its on-device model, but when users need richer, prompt-driven results, they can opt in to send content to ChatGPT, always under their control, without data sharing unless explicitly permitted.
Remote generation fills a gap. Since last year’s launch, Image Playground’s on-device models handled basic styles well, but often floundered when prompts demanded nuance. Now, “Any Style” gives users a flexible option: describe a scene or vibe, and let ChatGPT deliver a more polished result.

Genmoji also got a bump. Users can now type descriptions or blend two emojis to create custom Genmojis. You can choose different facial expressions or hairstyles, offering more ways to personalize emojis.
Developers gain access to the Image Playground API, enabling creative tools inside third-party apps for tasks like invitations, social posts, or brand content. Coupled with Apple opening its on-device model to devs via Foundation Models, this shows Apple’s strategy to advance creativity tools while keeping user data private and operations offline-ready.
This update brings Image Playground a proper facelift. It continues Apple’s balancing act of offering powerful capabilities with strong privacy, and gives creative pros the tools to use them in new ways.
