The native Windows Mobile 6.1 experience has been accused in past of being poorly optimized for the high-resolution screens as found in the new generation of Windows Mobile devices. Strangely enough however the tools and options to improve this are often buried already in the OS, accessible via the registry.

One such hack is the ability to change your icon grid on the programs and settings screens from 3 to 4 columns.

              Low Density                            High Density

The simple registry edits needed are as follows:

In HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\
Add a New Key “IconConfig”

In there Add DWORD Value:
“HorizontalIconSpacing” Dec value=”112″
“VerticalIconSpacing” Dec value=”115″
“IconTitleFontSize” Dec value=”6″

If you are a bit scared of editing your registry the process can be automated by simply installing this cab found in this post here.

By decreasing “HorizontalIconSpacing” to 90 5-rows of icons can be achieved, but that may be pushing things a bit.

Edit: One of our readers has confirmed this hack works on other VGA devices such as the  Imate 9502. On larger screen devices this mod will be even more useful.

Happy hacking 🙂
