At 6th Annual TechFest conference at Microsoft, Microsoft Research revealed no.of new projects they were working on. Viral Search, SketchInsight, new Kinect features, are some of them. They also revealed three projects which are several different methods, each of which is capable of producing a 3-D scan of an object pretty much in real time. One involves using a regular Kinect sensor to scan the object, and another involves a green screen and number of other sensors. The third one is interesting because it makes use of a Windows Phone device.

You need to slowly move across the object with this app running on Windows Phone, it takes series of photos and sends it to the cloud where it will be stitched and again sent back to your Windows Phone as an 3D image. Check out the demo above.
