Despite being a flagship Windows Phone in its day, the Nokia Lumia 920 was also a pretty rugged device, and in my experience survived hundreds of falls which would have destroyed a lesser handset.

Now a Chinese man reports that, were it not for his Nokia Lumia 920, he would have suffered serious injury or died, after a wall collapsed on him.

The incident happened in the Gansu province on Sunday afternoon, after a 20 metre long wall collapsed after being hit by a steel bar.

Geng Ming was one of 9 people buried by the collapse, but suffered only minor injuries after he told reporters he instinctively held up his Nokia Lumia 920 to protect his head from the failing debris.

The handset appears to have suffered only relatively minor screen damage itself, and should return home with Geng, who expects to be discharged soon.

Unfortunately the rest of the people involved in the incident were less lucky. Two people were killed and three of the victims are still in critical condition.
