AMD unveils 16-core high-end desktop processor

At its Financial Analyst Day, AMD yesterday detailed the next phase of its long-term growth strategy. AMD is generally known for its low-end and mid-range desktop processors. AMD wants to change this outlook with its upcoming high-performance consumer and commercial Ryzen processors that are designed to bring innovation and competition back to the full spectrum of premium PC markets.
AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper is a “Zen”-based CPU with up to 16-cores and 32-threads with a new platform with expanded memory and I/O bandwidth, designed for the high-end desktop market. It is expected to be available for summer 2017. AMD also highlighted that its Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 powered Windows-based systems from the top five OEMs will launch in Q2 2017.
AMD’s Ryzen Mobile APUs (codenamed “Raven Ridge”) integrate a 4-core, 8-thread “Zen”-based CPU and high-performance “Vega” graphics to deliver an expected 50 percent increase in CPU performance and over 40 percent better graphics performance, at half the power of its previous generation. This new AMD mobile processor will be available in the second half of 2017.
