Apple AirPods Pro

Apple is reportedly developing a new AirPods feature that will enable real-time translation of in-person conversations, according to a Bloomberg report. The feature is expected to be released later this year as part of an AirPods software update in conjunction with the release of iOS 19.

Live-translation might be a lot faster than on the iPhone

Live-translate ensures easy communication between speakers of different languages. For example, if an English speaker who is an AirPods user converses with a Spanish speaker, the iPhone will capture the Spanish speech, translate it, and forward the translation in English via the AirPods. The reply from the English speaker will be translated into Spanish and read aloud over the iPhone speakers.

This new feature will tap into Apple’s existing Translate app, making it perform better by integrating it straight with AirPods. While the Translate app already provides conversation translation, AirPods integration will probably make the process more convenient, with a smoother and more user-friendly process.

Pixel Buds already support (since forever) live-translation

Apple’s move follows similar features from the competition. Google’s Pixel Buds, for instance, have supported live translation since 2017. By adding this feature, Apple aims to provide AirPods users with similar, if not superior, translation functionality.

In addition to the live translation capability, Apple is also rumored to have some significant software updates lined up. These include a redesign of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS interfaces, an attempt to refresh the operating systems for the new generation of users. Improvements to the Translate app are also anticipated, but the details about it remain under wraps.

The live translation feature should become available on existing AirPods devices via a software update in combination with iOS 19, which is due for release later this year. This is in keeping with Apple’s new strategy of introducing AirPods features via software updates, allowing users to access new features without needing new hardware purchases.
