Key notes
- Google has made Gemini 2.0 Flash the default model in the Gemini app, replacing older versions soon.
- Paid users keep features like a 1M token context window, Deep Research, and upgraded Imagen 3 for image generation.
- Developers get a new Multimodal Live API for real-time voice and video interactions, plus a unified Gen AI SDK.
Google introduced Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental quite some time ago, an upgraded AI model available through the Gemini Developer API and Google AI Studio.
And what’s new now is that the Gemini 2.0 Flash model is now the default on the Gemini app, although there’s a catch you may not want to miss.
The company mentions that Gemini 2.0 Flash improves its response times and outperforms Gemini 1.5 Pro in most benchmarks. It also offers better coding assistance, instruction-following, and function-calling abilities.
So now, paid Gemini Advanced users can retain access to a 1M token context window, Deep Research, and Gems. Besides, image generation has been upgraded with Imagen 3, which has been quietly launched for quite some time now. The update is now available on Gemini web and mobile.
But the catch is, that all the older models, including Gemini 1.5 Flash and 1.5 Pro, will only be supported on the platform for the next few weeks as Google is preparing for a complete transition to 2.0 Flash.
As for developers, a key upgrade to Gemini 2.0 Flash is the Multimodal Live API, which enables real-time voice and video interactions. With that, you can have natural conversations with the AI, interrupt responses with voice commands, and receive text or speech output. The model also processes text, audio, and video inputs more efficiently.
Still from Google-related news, the Mountain View tech giant has also launched the Google Gen AI SDK, a one-stop interface for the Gemini API, with Python and Go support available now and Java and JavaScript coming soon.
