Key notes

  • Huawei’s Mate XT launched globally, priced at €3,499 ($3,660), with significant pre-order interest.
  • It faces challenges due to the lack of Google apps and the older Kirin 9010 chipset.
  • Samsung’s Galaxy G Fold is expected in 2026, competing with the Mate XT at a similar premium price.

Huawei launched its tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT, a while ago in its home country of China. And now, fans worldwide can get their hands and buy the world’s first-ever tri-fold that shook the market when it first dropped.

Huawei’s Mate XT made its global debut outside of China with a hefty price tag of €3,499 ($3,660), nearly double that of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6. CNBC first reported that the Mate XT was listed for sale in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The Mate XT faces challenges in adoption due to the lack of Google apps, as Huawei’s devices run on its own HarmonyOS NEXT, which can raise some eyebrows, especially for security and privacy concerns in various regions.

The phone is also powered by the older Kirin 9010 chipset, which could hinder its performance and efficiency compared to competitors. Google’s suspension of business with Huawei, following the U.S. decision to add the Chinese company to the Entity List, has also been severely impacting Huawei’s smartphone ambitions since 2019.

At its launch, which coincided with Apple’s iPhone 16 drop, Huawei’s Mate XT garnered significant attention with 3 million pre-orders. While Huawei holds a strong second place in the Chinese market and is leading the foldable phone race, Apple has yet to enter this category.

Though, Samsung is also rumored to release its tri-fold smartphone, the Galaxy G Fold, in early 2026, competing with the Mate XT.

Expected to weigh 298g, it will feature a 9.96-inch width and 6.54-inch height, folding inwards from both sides with a smaller cover display. Production will be limited to 300,000 units, and the phone is anticipated to cost between $2,500 and $3,000.
