Energizer, the popular battery company, utilizes Performance Designed Products (PDP) to make their charging stations for Xbox One controllers. Usually these items are of the highest quality but today the company issued quite a significant recall in partnership with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Energizer’s Xbox One 2X Smart Charger—which released a month ago and is sold all over the world—overheats and melts the plastic cover. Many customers have also reported the smell of burning plastic which accompanies the deformation.
While worldwide sales figures aren’t available because these products are sold on eBay in addition to many other retailers, around 130,810 units have been sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico. PDP stated that customers who have “048-052-NA” printed on the bottom of their Xbox One 2X Smart Chargers should send their units back. Unfortunately, it looks like many retailers are still selling the defective charging stations. If you’re in the market for the accessory or recently purchased one, be sure to check the bottom of the device to make sure your unit isn’t subject to the recall.
Even if your unit isn’t part of the recall, monitor it for the smell of burning plastic or if using it causes plastic on your controller or the charging station to melt. Recalls usually occur when there’s a significant risk to the safety of consumers so exercising caution in these situations is necessary. Consumers with recalled devices should contact PDP at 1-800-263-1156 from 10 AM to 4 PM PT and ask for a refund.
