In 2014 Microsoft was meant to release 2 GDR updates to Windows Phone 8.1, but we know in the end they only managed one, and even this is still rolling out to some handsets in 2015.

Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 or Update 2 is however shipping on Microsoft’s very latest Windows Phones, the Lumia 640 and 640 XL, even though its rumoured not to be for general roll-out to existing devices.

WindowsMania.pl, who always manage to get their hands on Microsoft’s goodies first, have posted this screen shot from a leaflet accompanying the Lumia 640 explaining what’s new.

As can be seen above, the list is pretty short, including:

  • Settings are now reorganized into groups, and you can even search them.
  • Switch your calendar to show week numbers in monthly view.
  • Switch mobile data on and off easily – add a shortcut to the action centre.
  • Cortana supports new languages: French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Of course we know there are other features not mentioned, such as support for Bluetooth Keyboards, but with the focus on Windows 10 Mobile now, it is still good to know what new Lumia 640 and 640 XL buyers will be getting.
