Key notes

  • Microsoft is reportedly testing Windows 11 Build 27547 in its internal Canary channel.
  • Build numbering matters, because Microsoft often makes a big jump in build numbers when testing a big change.
  • However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s testing a “Windows 12” insider build.

Microsoft has dropped a few clues here and there, hinting at a big upgrade for Windows 11, although it won’t necessarily be called a Windows 12.

A discussion was sparked when Windows enthusiast @XenoPanther shared on X (previously Twitter) that Microsoft is evaluating “Build 27547” on its internal Canary, a private platform exclusively accessible to Microsoft employees where they trial new features and enhancements.

Why does the numbering system matter? Because Microsoft often foreshadows significant changes by abrupt shifts in build numbers. Canary insiders typically receive builds with the number 26XXX, with the most recent being 26040, so this massive jump to 27XXX should mean something.

This pattern also aligns with previous Windows releases, such as Windows 10 (19XXX) and Windows 11 (22XXX).

But folks & popular reports are speculating that this means a “Windows 12” has been internally tested, although that isn’t entirely accurate.

Instead, once it’s ready for beta testing, it could be a substantial upgrade packed with AI features that could be rolled out for the Canary channel for insiders, the Germanium platform (ge_release). This upgraded version is likely to be released as the “Windows 12 2024 Update,” or Hudson Valley (24H2).

AI features have been the highest selling point for Microsoft. The Redmond company’s boss Satya Nadella said in earning reports for Q2 of the fiscal year 2024 that the company’s expansion of AI across its technology infrastructure has been instrumental in securing new customers.
