Key notes
- Microsoft Copilot might be including ads in its results.
- Ads were disguised as sources within response outlines.
- This behavior seems to be inconsistent, possibly under testing.
Microsoft Copilot is possibly integrating advertisements into its suggestions. As seen on X, it has surfaced online, indicating that Copilot, in some instances, might generate responses where informational bullet points include sub-points containing ads.
This was seen when a user prompted Copilot for “resources for data analysis.” While the initial suggestions seemed legitimate, later points allegedly included ads disguised as additional resources. Even though the later suggestions were still good, but instead of Copilot sourcing them to the original sourced, it was sourced to someone who paid for it and had a clear marking of ‘Ad’ on it.
However, my attempt to replicate this behavior wasn’t successful as I didn’t see any ads, which means the feature might still be in testing or undergoing a gradual rollout.
Here is a step you can take regarding all this:
Privacy Settings: Microsoft offers a “commercial data protection” setting that disables targeted advertising in Copilot.
Regardless of ads, it’s always important to critically evaluate Copilot’s responses. Double-check information with trusted sources before using it.
Users who rely on Copilot for assistance are advised to conduct independent research to verify the legitimacy of any suggested resources, particularly those appearing later in response sequences.
