Key notes
- OpenAI is removing ChatGPT’s model picker to unify o-series and GPT-series models.
- GPT-4.5 (Orion) will be the last model without chain-of-thought reasoning, followed by GPT-5.
- GPT-5 will integrate o3, offering more powerful features for Plus and Pro users, with a simpler, unified system.
OpenAI has launched a lot of models since ChatGPT first arrived back in 2022, including the likes of GPT-4o and the reasoning-excelling o1 and o3 models. You can pick them all through ChatGPT’s model picker, but if you’re not deep in AI, you might be confused about which model to use for certain tasks.
OpenAI shares the same thought, and so moving on, the Microsoft-backed company said that it’s killing ChatGPT’s model picker to “unify o-series models and GPT-series models.”
“We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence,” OpenAI boss Sam Altman says in the company’s roadmap update.
So, instead of having to choose between many models, OpenAI plans to create a unified system where the AI will just “work” better for everyone. The next update will bring GPT-4.5, called “Orion,” which will be the last model without chain-of-thought reasoning.
After that, GPT-5 will combine the best parts of the o-series and GPT-series models.
GPT-5 will be available to free-tier users at a standard level of intelligence, while Plus and Pro subscribers can access even more powerful versions with features like voice, canvas, search, and deep research.
OpenAI will also integrate the o3 model, which arrived back in December 2024, into GPT-5.
“In both ChatGPT and our API, we will release GPT-5 as a system that integrates a lot of our technology, including o3. We will no longer ship o3 as a standalone model,” Altman continues.
