ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode

A while ago, OpenAI announced that it’s launching GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, the successor models of the now-running GPT-4.

Now, in a recent exchange on X, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, confirmed that the upcoming GPT-4.5 update will not include voice mode, ChatGPT’s flagship lifelike humanoid feature that lets you talk with the AI like you talk with your peers.

Responding to a question from Amjad Masad, Altman stated that while voice functionality is not part of GPT-4.5, OpenAI does have plans to implement it in future updates.

Altman explicitly says, “not with 4.5, but we want to make it much much better. super important for future products.” Both of these models are launching in a matter of “weeks or months.”

Altman has also hyped GPT-4.5 as the closest thing we have to AGI, or artificial general intelligence, with testers describing the experience as a “feel the AGI” moment. After GPT-5’s launch, the company will then merge the o3 model, which arrived in December 2024, into the new one, and eliminate ChatGPT’s model picker.

“We want AI to โ€œjust workโ€ for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten,” the OpenAI’s boss has previously said in an update of the company’s roadmap.

GPT-5, which will obviously arrive after GPT4.5, will be available to free-tier users at a standard level of intelligence, while Plus and Pro subscribers can access even more powerful versions with features like voice, canvas, search, and deep research.

“After that, a top goal for us is to unify o-series models and GPT-series models by creating systems that can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks,” he continues.
