YouTube channel JerryRigEverything have posted a video comparing the video recording quality of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge vs the Lumia 950 XL.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is widely believed to have the best camera on a smartphone at present, making it quite a standard for the Lumia 950 XL to live up to.

The video however shows that there are areas where the Lumia 950 XL is better than the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and also vice versa.  Colours are for example more saturated with the Lumia 950 XL, which is more pleasing to the eye, and the digital image stabilization on the front facing camera is clearly much better than its complete absence on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

There are also however clear areas where the SGS7 Edge is better, including much better auto-focus, a persistent issue with Lumia handsets which Microsoft still has to fix.  The slow motion is also at a slower frame rate than the SGS7 Edge, but due to this the video is also brighter, making it a wash I think.

The focus-hunting issue is however a very significant issue for the Lumia handset, making the video very often unusable, and due to this I think it is clear that the Samsung handset will ultimately produce better results.

This is however an issue Microsoft could fix with a firmware upgrade, though after a few generations of cameras with the same issue we should not hold our breaths.
