Back in 2014, Microsoft announced that they are acquiring Mojang, the developer of popular cross-platform game franchise Minecraft for about $2.5 billion. Even though the game is now a decade old, it is still growing very fast. In late December 2017, Microsoft revealed that Minecraft is at 74 million monthly active users. In October 2018, Microsoft revealed that Minecraft’s monthly active user base grew to 92 million. Speaking to Business Insider, Microsoft has now revealed that Minecraft now has 112 million monthly active players, a healthy 20 million increase from last year.

Minecraft’s growth is really impressive given the fact that it is a paid app on most platforms and competes with several new hit games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Pokemon Go, Fortnite and Roblox. On the other side, Microsoft is trying to keep Minecraft relevant for  the next decade with the introduction of Minecraft Earth, an AR-based Minecraft experience for mobile devices.
