Microsoft Surface Pro 7

Microsoft stopped releasing firmware updates to Surface Pro (5th Gen) last month, as the product reached end-of-life support in January 2024. And a month after, another Surface device will stop receiving firmware updates from Microsoft: the Surface Pro 7.

Microsoft Surface Pro released way back in 2019 and will reach the end of life on February 28, 2024. So, Surface Pro 7 users have enjoyed close to five years of regular firmware updates. Since Surface Pro 7 was released before 2021, it’s eligible for a minimum of fours years of firmware support. If you’re using a Surface Pro 7, here is what will happen after February 28, when your device will no longer receive firmware updates:

  • Your Surface Pro 7 will continue to receive Windows updates, including monthly security patches, popularly known as Patch Tuesday.
  • Microsoft will no longer fix issues specific to the Surface Pro 7 via firmware updates.

Firmware updates improves the performance and stability of hardware components of the Surface device. They can also be released to fix bugs causing trouble in specific Surface devices. Surface Pro 7 will get none of that after it reaches end of support this month.

Apart from the Pro 7, other Surface devices that will reach the end of life include Surface Studio 2, Surface Laptop 3, Surface Go 2, Surface Laptop Go. You can see the firmware support life cycle of all the Surface devices from here. If you own a Surface device, how many years of firmware updates are your device is eligible to get?
