Last year, Microsoft announced the Azure Data Box, a 45 pound, ruggedized, tamper-resistant, and human-manageable hardware appliance that can be used to transfer up to 100 TB of data. Since then, Azure customers have used them to transfer petabytes of data into Azure. Based on the customer feedback, Microsoft is today announcing Azure Data Box Disk, a smaller version of Data Box with 40TB capacity that is even easier to use.

Data Box Disk uses SSD and is shipped overnight. The disks connect via USB or SATA, and simple commands such as robocopy or drag-and-drop can be used to move data. Data Box Disk also uses AES 128-bit encryption just like Azure Data Box.

Data Box Disk is now available in preview in the US and Europe. You can sign-up for preview here.
