RIM’s share price had an odd reaction to their horrible recent quarterly earnings report. Instead of crashing the share price was up sharply, and this was not due to increased confidence in the company, but increased certainty the company will realise it can no longer go it alone and seek a buyer.
According to the Wall Street Journal the likeliest buyer would be a joint venture between Microsoft and Nokia, with Microsoft taking the server back end and Nokia the hardware business, jettisoning Blackberry OS along the way.
RIM has publicly said they were examining all options, and there is rumours that Nokia and Microsoft has already had discussions with RIM last year about a purchase. With RIM’s future now even more uncertain the odds of talks resuming are increased.
Buying and integrating RIM would be tricky. The Canadian government stipulates a deal of such size must show a net benefit for the country. There is also no guarantee RIM’s customers would accept having their familiar OS replaced by Windows Phone, especially when it offers less management options, and Windows Phone at present does not support the familiar Blackberry form factor.
Do our readers think adding RIM to the Windows Phone panoply would benefit the adoption of our favourite OS, or actually set back development by introducing delays and confusion in development priorities? Let us know below.
