It looks like Apple has finally realized that it should embrace other ecosystems to grow its services revenue. At CES 2019, Samsung announced that Apple will release its official iTunes Movies and TV Shows app for Samsung Smart TVs that are releasing in 2019. In addition to that, these models will also support AirPlay 2. Basically, Apple is eliminating the need of Apple TV for Samsung TV customers. Samsung announced that it will be bringing iTunes Movies and TV Shows and Apple AirPlay 2 support to 2018 Samsung Smart TVs via a future firmware update.
With this new iTunes Movies and TV Shows app, customers can access their existing iTunes library and browse the iTunes Store to buy or rent movies and TV episodes. Another interesting announcement is that iTunes Movies and TV Shows will work seamlessly with Samsung’s Smart TV Services, such as Universal Guide, the New Bixby and Search.
“We pride ourselves on working with top industry leaders to deliver the widest range of content services to our Smart TV platform,” said Won-Jin Lee, Executive Vice President, Service Business of Visual Display at Samsung Electronics. “Bringing more content, value and open platform functionality to Samsung TV owners and Apple customers through iTunes and AirPlay is ideal for everyone.”
