Stephen Elop has removed a tiny bit of speculation around the launch of their new range of Windows Phone 8 handsets, confirming to Reuters that the handsets will be released “relatively near term.”

The rather vague statement still excited the markets, seeing Nokia shared trading up 7.5% this morning.

While Nokia has only sold around 6 million Windows Phones so far, Stephen Elop did not express any regrets about the move to the new OS.

“I don’t think about rewinding the clock and thinking about competing elsewhere,” he told reporters.

“In today’s war … (between) Android, Apple and Windows, we are very clear, we are fighting that with the Windows phone.”

Nokia World is set for the 5th to 6th September and current rumours are for a September 5th launch and an early or late October release.
