Last week, we reported about a flaw in Pixel 4’s Face Unlock system which can unlock the phone even when the device owner’s eyes are closed, meaning anyone could easily unlock a device while the owner of the device is sleeping. Google later confirmed the issue and argued that Pixel 4 face unlock meets the security requirements as a strong biometric, and can be used for payments and app authentication, including banking apps. Even with the flaw described above, Google’s Face Unlock system is resilient against invalid unlock attempts via other means, like with masks.
