While referring to Microsoft Edge as one of the supported browsers for the Gemini Web App, the app help page refers to Edge as ‘Edgium’ when mentioning the Gemini Web App’s eligibility and requirements.

Microsoft Edge switched to Blink/Chromium in 2020 to avoid compatibility issues where Microsoft Edge and previously Internet Explorer were the popular browsers. When IE dominance was suppressed, Chrome browser launched by Google based on Chromium has risen to be the number one browser used by people in the world.

Despite making Microsoft Edge default in Windows, it hasn’t helped Edge surpass Chrome’s market share. While web developers ensured every app and website works best on Chromium-based Chrome, eventually, Microsoft switched to Chromium as well.

Someone posted to Reddit over Google referring to Edge as Edgium. To be honest, most called Edge as ‘Edgium’ and ‘Chredge’ when Microsoft made the switch. Now, the Gemini Web App support page mentioning this triggers the debate that never ends.

As one of the comments on the post suggests, it’s probably internal slang that was written by an inexperienced editor by mistake. Google doesn’t officially refer to it as Edgium.
