It’s becoming increasingly popular to deactivate your Facebook account, while still using Messenger to contact your friends.

Soon, you’ll no longer be able to enjoy all the same features from the app alone, unless you have an active Facebook account.

Instant games, like Space Invaders, will migrate from the Messenger app into the Facebook Gaming tab.  The transition will happen in a few stages.  Leo Oleb, Global Director of Games Partnerships, said the following in a blog post:

To ensure a smooth transition, players in Messenger will continue to access games through thread updates and chatbots, while gameplay itself will app switch to Facebook.

Supposedly the purpose of the change is to “de-clutter” the recently updated app.  Although, with the introduction of esports streaming and user meetups; it seems like another way to encourage you to stick with Facebook.
