WP8 leak points to separate Xbox Music cloud storage service

There has been a long-standing rumour that Windows Phone 8 users will be able to stream music from their SkyDrive storage.

A screen shot from the leaked Windows Phone 8 emulator however suggests that this storage may be separate from SkyDrive, in the so-called “Xbox Music cloud collection”.

This idea is consistent with earlier rumours that Microsoft was negotiating with record labels for additional music streaming rights.

Bloomberg noted at the time:

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) plans an expansive Xbox music service joining Spotify-style streaming with download and online-storage functions similar to Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iTunes, several people with knowledge of the situation said.

I suspect our readers would prefer all cloud storage be managed via SkyDrive, but given that backed-up Windows Phone 8 app settings will likely not be stored in SkyDrive it seems there are going to be many more than one cloud in the Windows Phone 8 sky.
