WP7 Game Review: Chicks’n’Vixens Beta

Chicks’n’Vixens is a new WP7 exclusive game that is just like Angry Birds except it’s actually available to us! It is currently in a beta stage, which means you can get it for free right now.

Overall Score: 3/5Chicks'n'VixensBeta

The visuals are great, and the music/sound effects rocks! The controls and gameplay are typically good, however they have some annoying problems. And the lasting value is limited.

Gameplay: 3/5

There is some incredible variation in the gameplay elements… from exploding chicks to destructible wood and glass platforms, and even TNT boxes, every level is unique! And panning around the environment using multitouch is really fluid! However, there is the occasional time when you try to pan around the screen and the game thinks you grabbed the cannon, forcing you to make your shot right now. And the controls for adjusting the cannon’s speed are practically useless, since you have to literally have your finger on the cannon for it to shoot any slower; doing that will of course block your view of where the cannon will shoot! And once you get to level 11, it seems like there is no way to progress any further in the game, since there is an unbreakable platform standing in your way of all the foxes. Level 11 actually works fine. To my stupidity (or something), I couldn’t time the explosive chick to break through the solid barrier. But level 10 has a glitch where you don’t even have to do anything and the level will beat itself within a few seconds. Once these bugs get fixed (it’s only a beta, this is understandable), the game will be fabulous!

Presentation: 5/5

The game looks amazing. Shooting the chicks leaves a trail of feathers, glass shatters when your projectiles hit, the foxes actually look at the incoming chicks, and the background/foreground panning is really fluid. The music perfectly fits the game. The sound effects are great. The animations between levels are simple and elegant. This is a quality game!

Lasting Value: 2/5

There are 18 levels in the game, which isn’t that many. More levels are planned for future updates, but as of now the lasting value is really limited. Getting to level 11 will probably only take 10-30 minutes. Since level 11 seems impossible (I honestly can’t figure out any way to get through it), that’s the end of the lasting value for me. After level 11, you’ll get another 10-30 minutes of gameplay. One thing that would really improve lasting value is a Star rating system for levels, where 5 stars would be “beating the level by using only 1 chick”, etc. As of now, there is no rating system at all, and a rating system isn’t listed in the developer’s future updates list.
