Some years ago scientists predicted phones would have up to 20 cameras, using computational photography to create amazing images.
It seems we are rushing headlong into that future, but instead of tiny cameras, it seems phones will soon be festooned with tens of full-sized lenses.
The furthest along in this evolution is the penta-lens camera phone, and after Nokia, Huawei appears to be the next to join the race with the Huawei Mate 30 Pro.
Till now believed to feature a quad-lens camera, a Huawei has filed a patent with CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) for a smartphone case (above) with a large camera cut-out, that seems to be meant for a penta-camera. This would be 5 lenses with the sixth space being taken up by a flash.
Nokia has been the first company to be confirmed working on a penta-lens camera, the Nokia 9 Pureview below.
Like the Nokia, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is expected to be announced at Mobile World Congress 2019 in February.
