Windows Phone 8 UI Will Come To Existing Windows Phone 7.X Devices

Microsoft today announced that some  existing Windows Phone devices will get the new Windows Phone 8 user interface in a separate update. Windows Phone 7.8 update for existing devices will bring support for Windows Phone 8 features such as new Live Tile sizes, etc,.

Of course, you won’t be able to get all the new resolution support, NFC support, multicore processor support, since your phone won’t be having specific hardware to support them.

Also Nokia is announcing all new apps for existing Windows Phone devices such as Nokia PlayTo, Nokia Camera Experts, new Nokia Music app, etc,.

Microsoft’s Greg Sullivan is quoted as saying:

“When you pull that Lumia out of your pocket after you’ve received that 7.8 update, it will look and feel the same as a Windows Phone 8 device,” he said. “It’s basically bringing the core elements of Windows Phone 7.8 start experience, and UX, right to existing phones.”

When pressed on exactly which devices will get the 7.8 update he said “I think it’s safe to assume to latest generation of devices are a primary target,” he said, pointing to the Lumia 900 as an example of a device that the company wants to “keep fresh.”
