Elbert Perez, who makes the arcade shoot-em up game Impossible Shoota has posted on his blog that his free Windows Phone 7 game has hit 21,000 downloads since it hit the marketplace in the 18th November, clocking in between 1000 and 1,400 downloads per day.

He notes that his other games, which were not free, did much less well, with less than 800 downloads between the two.

Like Roger Peters from Smartypants Coding he has discovered making your game free pays off, and he intends to monetize his game by using Microsoft’s new XNA ad network plugin.

Elbert notes that his game is currently the 7th top free app, which suggests that certainly the top 10 developers have a good opportunity to make some money in Marketplace, even if their software is free.
