Digitimes has added some colour to previously leaked information regarding the relationship between Windows Mobile 6.5 and 7.
From a rather loose-lipped interview we already knew Windows Mobile 6.5 and 7 would co-exists, but the Digitimes article ads a rather fore-boding time-scale to the launch of the revamped OS.
According to Digitimes the first version of Windows Mobile 6.5 will come as expected in October this year, followed in February not by WM7, but a more touch-optimised version of 6.5, likely based on what we have seen leaked recently.
Windows Mobile 7 devices will be launched only in Q4 2010, and will not displace WM 6.5, leaving it to battle Android at the low end, while the new OS takes on the iPhone at the high end.
While the negative impact of this immense delay depends very much on how good a job Microsoft does in overhauling Windows Mobile 6.5, unless the services such as a Zune Marketplace comes along Windows Mobile 7 may come into a much shrunken market share.
