Windows Mixed Reality returns to growth in latest SteamVR numbers

Steam’s Hardware Survey numbers are out for October 2018, which give us a rare look into the market share of the various VR headsets, due to Steam’s cross-platform support and their attractive library of VR games and other applications.

Last month we expressed concern about anaemic growth from WMR headsets, with numbers only growing 0.04%. This month Windows Mixed Reality numbers are up a healthy 0.5%, suggesting that the WMR ecosystem may be heading for a healthy holiday season.

WMR share is up despite the introduction of the HTC Vive Pro and Huawei VR, which has impacted the Oculus Rift numbers.

The HTC Vive, which went from 42.36% to 44.97% from September to October 2018.

Oculus Rift’s headsets shrunk share from 48.38% to 47.28 of the market.

It should be noted that Steam’s numbers are an indirect measure, and if headset users instead use their native portals and games these numbers would fluctuate accordingly.
