WP8.1 vs W10M
A week ago we complained that Windows Phone includes a number of hidden data caps which can bite you when you are out and about and away from WIFI, including not being able to download offline maps data.
It seems fixing this issue was already on Microsoft’s list, as the new Maps app in Windows 10 Mobile includes a toggle which says:
Maps will only be downloaded on free Wi-Fi or unlimited cellular data plans until you turn this on. (You may incur additional charges when using metered connections.)
The feature is part of many which has seen Microsoft slowly loosen its grip and control on Windows Phone users, best exemplified by a simple toggle which lets even average users side-load applications easily. Hopefully we will see many more such user-orientated features in the final release of the OS, removing some of the objections android users may have to using a relatively locked down OS.Via
