It looks like WhatsApp is planning to show advertisements in the Status tab soon. The messaging app has been free since Facebook acquired it back in 2014. Before that, the service used to be free for a year post which they charged $0.99.
However, the days of using WhatsApp ad-free might be over as the IM might soon get ads. This was first discovered by the folks at WABetaInfo on WhatsApp iOS app. This is not the first time Facebook tried to monetize WhatsApp but since WhatsApp founders have now left the company, Facebook can easily go ahead with the plan. Brian Acton, the co-founder of WhatsApp also shed light on how they were opposed to the idea of monetizing WhatsApp.
I sold my users’ privacy to a larger benefit. I made a choice and a compromise. And I live with that every day.
– Brian Acton, Founder, WhatsApp
However, both Jan Koum and Brian Acton have now left WhatsApp which has allowed Facebook to finally monetize the app. The app will soon show ads like it does on Instagram Stories. We have no timeline on when ads will start to show up but it will be soon on iOS and Android will follow later on.
