Vufone, another cloud-based sync solution

You wait all day for the bus, and then three arrive at the same time…

Much like the browser situation on Windows Mobile, which went from near no choice to an overwhelming selection, the cloud-based sync environment has just exploded with choice recently on Windows Mobile. We have the now venerable Dashwire, we have Sprite’s solution and we have Microsoft’s impending MyPhone service, and now we have Vufone also.

Vufone is a new service which allows mobile phone users to backup, synchronize and manage their phone on the web. The software, which supports Windows Mobile, Symbian and also Java-based phones is said to allow seamless, periodical, automated and simple bi-directional synchronization or contacts, calendar, messages, images and photos, video files and music to a secured account on the web. vufone also allows you to mesh up and share your data with services such as Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, Youtube, Google Calendar and Google contacts.

Uniquely the service does not just allow one to backup media and access it from the web, but also for example play mp3’s and videos synched from your device directly from the website.

The service allows one to sync, backup and restore contacts, calender, pictures and other media , and also move it from your old phone to your new one.

Some of the extra features of the service are:

  • Create online albums and show them to friends and family on the Web
  • Send your pictures and videos to friends’ phones
  • Upload your mobile photos and videos to your favorite social network like Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, YouTube
  • View your photos and videos online in full quality
  • MyPersona – make your picture appear on your friends phone when you call them
  • Grab pictures from any Internet site directly to your vufone account and your phone using our Internet Explorer and Firefox plug-ins.
  • Turn any web picture into your phones wallpaper
  • Listen to your mobile music online

Most of the functionality of the service is free, but extra features such as more regular automatic sync than every month will cost extra. If uses sign up before 1 March however they will get 1 years service free.
