The Surface Book unveil was groundbreaking, mainly due to its amazing detachable hinge, which uses exotic “muscle-wire” based actuators to release the tablet from the base of the laptop at the press of the button.

Today Ralf Groene, head of Industrial Design for Microsoft Devices, shared the above picture, which shows an early prototype of the device used to develop the iconic feature.

The amazing design of the Surface Book won Microsoft a lot of kudos, setting expectations which were somewhat disappointed by the mundane design of the Surface Laptop.

Hopefully in 2019 Microsoft will win back some of that magic with a new generation of amazing and astounding devices, such as the rumoured Surface Andromeda, Surface Centaurus and Surface Januss devices.
