Statcounter shows steady Windows Phone growth, but NetApplications shows opposite result

It’s the first of the month, which means another time to take stock of the latest stats. Statcounter, which measure hits to hundreds of websites shows a steady increase, though at a slightly lower rate in April than the month before.

In contrast NetApplications shows a big drop in Windows Phone share in April.

At first it is difficult to reconcile these, until one realizes that NetApplications apply  regional corrections to their raw numbers which may be disadvantaging Windows Phone in some areas.  In addition if much of Windows Phone’s growth is in the lower cost market, who lack unlimited data plans and are much more likely to mainly use their smartphone as a phone, it would similarly impact Windows Phone web use.
