The recent PS5 launch may have been plagued by low stock and production issues, but that hasn’t stopped Sony from having its biggest console launch ever.
With five systems released since 1994, Sony knows a thing or two about launching a console, but the massive demand for the next-gen PlayStation 5 has seen record-breaking success for the hardware company.
In a statement released on Twitter, PlayStation said that the demand for their new console is “unprecedented”, overtaking the PS2 as the most demanded Sony console launch.
“We want to thank gamers everywhere for making the PS5 launch our biggest console launch ever,” the PlayStation Twitter account reads. “Demand for PS5 is unprecedented, so we wanted to confirm that more PS5 inventory will be coming to retailers before the end of the year – please stay in touch with your local retailers.”

Sony’s PS5 launch led to some interesting PR moves from the hardware company. Not only did the company spruce up London’s underground signs to promote the event, including one right outside a Microsoft Store, but they also partnered with British bakery chain Greggs to release an awesome PS5 launch meal deal. (It was very tasty!)
PlayStation isn’t the only console company to celebrate a smashing launch for their new hardware. Releasing just two days earlier, Microsoft’s two console launch of Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X saw record-breaking numbers for the company.
“We are humbled by the record-breaking demand for Xbox Series X and S. Huge thanks to everyone for the excitement,” Xbox wrote following the successful launch.
With Xbox not revealing their sales figures for Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X hardware at all, even if they do manage to outperform the PlayStation 5, we won’t know which of the two companies had a more successful launch. What do you think? Tell us in the comments.
