If you favourite 3D shooter or racer is failing to run on Windows Phone 8.1 the Unity 3D game engine may be the reason.
Posting on the Unity Forums, Unity Developer Tautvydas Zilys has revealed that Unity 4.2 has a compatibility issue with Windows Phone 8.1, which causes games to crash on the splash screen.
The issue is apparently due to stricter graphics driver requirements in the new OS, but fortunately the fix, for developers at least, is rather simple, with them only needing to recompile their app with Unity 4.3.
Have any of our readers on WP8.1 run into this issue? Let us know below.
See Tautvydas’s post after the break.
In collaboration with Microsoft, we have recently discovered an issue with all Unity 4.2.x Windows Phone 8 games running on Windows Phone 8.1. It causes all apps made with Unity 4.2 crash on the splashscreen due to stricter graphics driver requirements. This problem is fixed in Unity 4.3.
What does it mean to you?
Microsoft has made applications that use Unity 4.2 not available on Windows Phone 8.1 store, as they do not work on any Windows Phone 8.1 device. Thus, if you have an application on Windows Phone store that is made with Unity 4.2, you should look into rebuilding the project using Unity 4.3 as soon as possible – before operating system is pushed to official Windows Update channels.
