It took some fiddling with the code (and it will surprise no-one that I am not a coder) but we have managed to switch off ads in our mobile site, which should make for an altogether smoother experience.
Of course the banner ads are still in place on the main site. We dislike ads as much as anyone else, but at the moment it is the only way to raise the several thousands dollars a month it takes to run the site.
Note we intentionally do not run pop ups, pop unders, annoying text link pop-up ads or interstitials (and all those pay really well I hear).
I would however want to float the option of paying a small fee to make the ads go away. Anyone can of course use ad blockers, but that doesn’t do anything to support the site. A small fee of $5 per year would guarantee an ad-free experience while still supporting the various writers on the site.
Of course I expect only a small percentage of people will sign up, but if there is enough interest in the comments below it may actually reduce the number of ads for everyone.
