SEGA’s remaster for the Dreamcast classics Shenmue and Shenmue 2 were originally supposed to be full remakes.

In a video by Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry, the original versions of what eventually became Shenmue 1 and 2 HD are a remarkable step up in visual fidelity compared to the Dreamcast originals. While it looks more like a last-gen title than many current releases, the few recreations of the games’ iconic locations are lovely to look at. Higher texture quality, improved models, additional environmental geometry, ambient occlusion, and more realistic lighting makes this the version of Shenmue I would really love to have seen release. Watch the video below.

It is a miracle that we got any sort of Shenmue remaster at all, though, and even in the buggy state that the recent HD remasters currently reside in, the revival of the Shenmue franchise is certainly one that fans are appreciative of. Maybe we’ll see a full remake like this teased footage sometime in the future, if we’re lucky, but the return of Shenmue is already something which has taken far too long.
