Seattle Seahawks ‘Fan Quakes’ And Microsoft Azure Help Scientists Track Real Earthquakes

Fan quakes” have become a common phenomenon, referring to ground tremors triggered by fervent, cheering Seahawks fans at the Seattle stadium. Now, researchers are using these quakes as the fertile testing ground for developing an earthquake warning system with help of Microsoft Azure.

The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) researchers have installed seismometers to measure the seismic activity that results from the celebratory ruckus after big plays at Seattle’s CenturyLink Field. Streaming of seismic data is based on open source software, with the internet-facing components hosted on Microsoft Azure. Watch to learn more about how the “Beastquake” was born!
