Samsung’s folding smartphone has not exactly had the best launch, but the company has continued to work on ideas that take advantage of flexible screens.

Their most recently published patent application, filed on the 28 November 2018, is for a regular-sized (if somewhat thick) smartphone which can become super long by extending upwards, unrolling a scroll of screen in the bottom of the handset.

They note the extension can either be manual or mechanized and that the edges of the screen would remain immobile, meaning users will be able to maintain their grip on the device while the screen extends.

Given the issues with dust and the ingress of other objects with the Samsung Galaxy Fold, I suspect this design will also end up impractical in reality.
