Samsung’s next folding phone may have a “Hideaway Hinge”

3, 2019

Samsung is expected to announce a cheaper clamshell folding smartphone next year, and that handset may feature what Samsung calls a Hideaway Hinge, according to a recently filed trademark application.

The exact nature of the Hideaway Hinge is unclear, but one can assume it will be a less prominent feature than the hinge on the Samsung Galaxy Fold which has been such a source of problems for that troubled handset.

Samsung’s vertical folder is expected to rival the new Motorola Razr.

The Korean manufacturer recently filed a few patents for a RAZR-like smartphone, which also led to people thinking that a Samsung clamshell foldable phone is in the works. The teaser release of the clamshell folding phone at the Samsung Developer Conference 2019 added fuel to rumours too.

It has been ported that Samsung’s upcoming clamshell foldable phone will retail for around $845, which is less than the price point of iPhone 11 Pro and of course, less than the price point of the Galaxy Fold, which costs a cool $2,000.

“Samsung’s plan to expand the foldable product lineup depends on the market response to the clamshell model slated for launch in 2020, but it is clear the firm will increase the lineup,” said Choi Bo-young, an analyst at Kyobo Securities.

The news suggests Samsung’s strategy may be to make folding phones a mere extra feature rather than the defining point of a handset, much like its curved screens now are a mere cosmetic feature rather than a selling point of the devices.

The trademark, picked up by LetsGoDigital, can be seen here.
