Last year, Nokia sold their HERE digital mapping and location services business to a consortium of leading automotive companies, comprising AUDI AG, BMW Group and Daimler AG. Since the acquisition, the consortium was open for other partners to join in developing HERE. Today, Reuters reported that Amazon and Microsoft have expressed interest in providing cloud computing technology to HERE. While Amazon is considering becoming a shareholder in HERE, Microsoft is also interested in closer ties to HERE.
When Microsoft acquired Nokia’s Devices and Services division few years back, then Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer wanted to acquire HERE Maps division as well. But according to various reports, Microsoft board rejected his proposal. If the deal was approved at that time, the price of HERE division would have been just around $1 – $2 billion.
Do you think Microsoft should buy minority stake in HERE to get access to latest mapping imagery and become their cloud technology provider?
